To all:
Ford Risley's Comm 401 class is looking at the coverage of the Titanic Disaster in the New York Times.
The film for April 16, 1912 is behind the reference desk on the little brown table (next to the reference desk book collection). Students will be asking for the NYT reel for the Titanic stories. Ask them to Please return it to the reference desk when they are finished. However, because we have one reel of film, Ford has authorized the use of the NYT Digital Archive so be sure you are able to show students how to find the front page for a specific date. Also remind them as Ford does to look at the PAGE MAP to see the entire page and stories in context.
Journal 5: Assignment as given by Professor Risley
Discuss the New York Times' coverage of the Titanic disaster. In your discussion, be sure to address the various ways the Times covered the story (stories, photos, etc.) and the subjects the paper covered. How does the coverage reflect the development of the press we have discussed? How is the Times' coverage both different from and similar to the way the news media covers a big event today? [You can read the coverage on microfilm or on the New York Times Digital Archive database. The microfilm is available at the News and Microforms Help Desk; the help desk can show you how to use the database. If you use the database, be sure to view the page maps as well as the article images so that you can see what the entire pages look like.] (Due October 12)
Please reply and let me know if you need help with this date specific and front page searching.

To All: Section ‘C’ from today’s Wall Street Journal is missing as of 11:40 Sept. 26th. This was reported by a patron. Business Library’s copy does have section ‘c’ so if you have patron asking for this please refer them to Business Library. Thanks Ashoo
DLT added an external USB port on at least one of the computers connected to the microform scanners. The port is sitting on the floor by the tower, is red, and is in the shape of a computer mouse. It is for the patrons to have access to a USB port that is in the back of the tower without moving the tower itself, which may pull out cords. ---------Rebecca
Staff,
Please be aware that we are airing C-SPAN's Presidential Library documentary series through November 30th. This will be on Friday evening at 8pm. Please make sure that the channel is changed in time to air the event from its beginning and walk over to the TV area and check the sound to make sure that it is at an adequate level. If you get a request to increase the volume, please do so. If you have any questions about the policy regarding the TV volume, refer to the Television News Viewing Area Policies in the reference desk binder.
Thank you for you cooperation,
Lisa
Copies of the instructions for Printing from PressDisplay are available in the draw at the desk under, "Printing from PressDisplay." There is a small supply to distribute as handouts as needed. A laminated copy is also available for patrons who just need to use the instructions while in the room.
The Printing from PressDisplay document is also available on the NML web home page directly under the PressDisplay link. Be aware that the document may need to be revised pending a thorough review of the new PressDisplay nterface. The document can also be expanded to include specific printing options depending on a user's specific printer type and paper size.
But, in the meantime, the current document should provide sufficient basic instructions for printing. If you hear about or encounter any discrepancies in the way, for example, the new public PCs print using these instructions, please let me know so we can get those points incorporated into the document.
Thanks!
Peggy
