Network PDF Printing Problems

All,

The following is an alert from the ITS "News and Alerts" log-on pop-up window, a really helpful feature of the new public PC image.

Peggy

Currently many PDF files over 1 page in length are failing to print. When this error occurs you will not receive a print pop-up message and are not being changed for the pages.
We are working with the software vendor to find a solution to the problem as fast as possible. The only known work around at this time is to print the document 1 page at a time.

Comm 401 Assignment: New York Herld and New York Herald Tribune

PLEASE Comment to this posting, so we are sure that everyone has seen this information.  Let Peggy or I know if you have any questions or suggestions.  Thanks for your help.  Debora

The Comm 401 students in Dr. Ford Risley's class will be coming in to look at reels of New York newspapers from the 19th century.

Their assignment is due (9/6) so they will come in between now and then.

There will be a series of these assignments for Dr. Risley's class, each with a different set of newspapers.

In each case he typically notifies me by e-mail and we pull the specific titles and reels and put them on a cart on the microforms side of the room labeled as being for their class.  Typically they have a range of dates so we usually have enough reels to go around.  Ask the students to return the reels once they use them to the cart for other students.  Our shelvers won't re-shelve this until a few days after the assignment is due.

This first time around, they won't know how to use the microforms equpment and you will need to take time to help them learn how to reel the film on to the machines.  Typically they don't want to print or scan, they usually have a series of questions or things they are looking for and just look at the microfilm and do their assignment.  But you should ask if they want to print or scan at the beginning.

This first assignment will be specific years from the following newspapers.  We will post to the blog future assignments as soon as we know about them so you have a heads up about each assignment.  Some of you may be asked by Peggy to pull reels and set up the cart for one of the assignments.

Print newspapers available

Print newspapers are now available.  A problem with the printer in the back office still exists, but it will not effect the printing of the newspapers.  If you have any questions, please ask.

Troubleshooting Network Printing Problems

All,

We experienced two separate runaway print jobs this morning.  According to the ITS HOTLINE, these two cases were caused by a bad Angel file.  However, this type of problem can be caused by other factors if it should happen in the future.

If you have a student whose print job keeps reprinting or continues to print blank pages, etc., the way to STOP the print job from printing is to turn the printer off at the ON/OFF button (lower right side of printer).  Then, immediately, call the ITS PRINTER HOTLINE phone number posted by the phone at the desk (8-777-0035)  While you are on the phone, ITS will clear the user's print job and reset the printer and system printing.  Once that is done, the ITS tech person on the phone will alert us that it's OK to turn the printer back on.

Once a student sends a print job to the printer, his/her account is immediately charged the entire amount regardless of when the printer is turned off.  The only thing we gain by turning the printer off is to save paper.

To obtain a print credit, the student needs to go to http://clc.its.psu.edu/Printing/  and fill out a form to request credit for the print job.  That is the ONLY way a student can get a print credit.  It takes a few days for the credit to be processed.  If the credit doesn't show up after that, the student needs to contact the ITS Computer Accounts Office (814-865-4772) or email accounts@psu.edu .

Students can check their print account status at  https://clc.its.psu.edu/Users/PrintingInfo.aspx .  But, the main web address for all information regarding printing and print credits is:  http://clc.its.psu.edu/Printing .  From there, the student needs to follow up on his/her own account.

In summary, to troubleshoot a printing problem:

1.  Turn the printer OFF at the ON/OFF button (lower right side of printer).
2.  Call ITS Printing HOTLINE:  777-0035 (remember to use prefix "8" for non-campus #).
3.  Stay on phone until ITS tech support clears printer, etc.
4.  Turn printer back on when directed by ITS.
5.  Direct student to ITS web page for printing to request print credit:  http://clc.its.psu.edu/Printing/

Please keep me posted on other printing irregularities so we can address any other problems.
Thanks.

Printed Newspapers

Staff,

We are experiencing problems with the copier that prints the Newspaper Direct newspapers.  We will not be able to print any newspapers until the problem is resolved.  Currently, we are missing part of Saturday's issues (depending on the title), as well as Sunday's and Monday's issues.  Until then, please refer patrons to the electronic image newspaper databases for these titles.

You will not be able to print anything to the backroom copier until the problem is fixed.  Until then, please use the desk printer.

Cable channels

Attention desk staff:

Just an alert to let you know that the TNS campus cable service has shuffled its channels and there are new channel numbers for all of the channels we now use (these are the two-digit channel numbers).  I have changed the staff schedule and the TV Channel Guide (located on the TV console and the training binder at the reference desk).  However, I sometimes miss one or two.  So, if you change the channel and the program or network is not what it says on the schedule, just let me know and I'll correct it as soon as possible.

Thanks for your cooperation,

Lisa

Public Machines and Printing Changes on the Horizon

The University Libraries are moving towards some changes in printing services at University Park locations: the printers operated to date by Nittany Office Equipment are being replaced with ITS lab printers. This project is being supported by Information Technology Fee funding.

This will have several benefits for students:

To enable the new printers, the extended use of the ITS lab desktop image framework to the public machines in the Libraries has been implemented. The support model for the ITS printers is also different.

This change is expected to take place in News and Microforms on August 15.  Many of you are already familiar with the ITS Lab model for computers and printing from using the numerous ITS Labs throughout campus.  We'll count on your experience and expertise to help us in the transition to a more seamless computing environment.

A Question and Answer session to outline how support for the ITS printers will work within the Libraries, as well as to respond to any questions you might have, will be held on
Thursday, August 9, 2007 at 3:30 p.m. in Foster Auditorium.   You are welcome to attend this information session open to all Libraries employees.
