To all: We now have a new handout for PressDisply that gives an example of how to print whole articles from Press Display.
We will find a place to link to it from the News and Microforms Library home page, but until then, if you have any questions, please provide them with a copy from the drawer.
Please reply to the post so I know you've read it.

Since we refer many patrons to collections in the Stacks the second posting about sprinkler construction may affect whether patrons can get into the Pattee Stacks throughout the summer. If you're unsure what stack level is closed. Please consult with staff or check for news/announcements on the Libraries home page.
Please COMMENT so tha I will know you have read this message. Thanks. Debora
The CAT down: 5/17-5/18-2007
The Libraries' CAT will be unavailable, 5/17-18/2007 for a system upgrade, 5:00 p.m. Thursday, May 17 through 8:00 a.m. Friday, May 18. All CAT services will be unavailable during this time. Service will be restored earlier if the installation goes smoothly. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Access to Pattee Library Stacks Disrupted Due to Construction beginning 5/21/2007
University Park, PA- Beginning the week of May 21, 2007 and continuing throughout the summer, access will be disrupted to the Pattee Library central stacks due to the installation of a sprinkler system. Each stack level will be closed for approximately three weeks as work progresses floor by floor. There will be no public access to collections and carrels on closed levels, during these periods.
Library users are encouraged to use the I WANT IT feature in The CAT, the online catalog, for the duration of the project. Pattee Library staff, will retrieve materials on a two-hour rotation. Materials requested will be retrieved and held for pick-up at either Pattee Lending Services Desk or another location selected from the menu of options. You will receive an e-mail notice when the item is available for pick-up at your chosen location. University Park locations other than the Pattee Lending Services desk will receive materials within 24-48 hours of the request.
Throughout the project, stacks availability will be updated at "News and Alerts" http://www.libraries.psu.edu/ and in individual entries in The Cat. Signs will also be posted in the library. Users and especially carrel holders are urged to regularly check these information sites.

Hi staff,
As many of you are aware, we have begun printing some of our international newspaper titles in the News and Microforms Library workroom on a color printer. There are some differences between this version of the newspaper and a traditional newspaper:
Given the obvious differences between these new printed versions and the traditional newspapers, we would like to know what our patrons think about the change. So, if you receive any comments about these newspapers while you are at the reference desk, please use the 'Comment' link in this post to record those comments. You will be able to access this post easily by using the 'printed newspaper feedback' link under the 'Archives' section in the navigation bar on the left side of this page. Click on the 'Comments' link and enter the patron's comment.
Helpful information would include date that the comment was received, name and status (faculty, graduate or undergraduate student, staff, etc.) of the person offering the comment--if they're willing to give it, the title of the newspaper they're commenting on (if applicable), and most importantly, the comment itself (what they like or don't like, do they have a request for another title, whether or not they notice something is missing from a newspaper that they normally read, etc.).
In addition, there will be comment forms at shelf locations around the room for them to use as well, but as some people are in a hurry, they may just wish to tell you what they think. If all they want to do is to tell you their comment and leave, that's fine. Just record that in the 'Comments.'
Thank you for your assistance in this process.
Lisa
Today a patron came in looking to print onto 11 by 17 paper. This cannot be done with the printers in the NML. However, for future reference, Lisa found a number of the places on campus with printers that will print to 11 x 17.

The department copy card is now in the first cabinet as you enter the larger workroom, in the top drawer, first folder on the left.

This is just a reminder to make sure the Film Viewing Room door is locked at all times the room is not in use. To help with monitoring the condition of the room after group use and to ensure the room is properly locked after use, Sandy came up with an excellent idea for our room procedures.
When the group rep returns the key bag to the desk, accept the bag, but after he/she leaves and BEFORE you discharge the key, check out the condition of the room and make sure the door is in the locked position. The door doesn't automatically lock; you have to turn the key to lock it. Then, return to the desk and discharge the key.
It is not necessary to discharge the key immediately, so if the desk is busy, just put the bag aside for a few minutes and check out the Film Viewing Room the next time you have a break from desk activity. Do make sure you discharge the key before the end of your shift.
If you encounter any problems doing things in this order, just let me know. Let's try this out for a while and see how it works. Thanks for your cooperation on this.
Peggy
