Comm 401 assignment - advertisements

Professor Risley has assigned his Comm 401 students the following assignment, due Monday 11/20/2006:

Choose a magazine published from 1940-1965 and discuss the advertising found in it. Describe three or four of the ads that grabbed your attention, including the copy and art used. How do the ads differ from earlier newspaper ads and how do they differ from magazine ads found today? What type of products were advertised? Be sure to note the magazine you examined and the date(s). You shoud choose your magazine from the following list: Time (F32), Ladies Home Journal (F2091), Saturday Evening Post (F2094), Sports Illustrated (F533), and New Yorker (F450). [Note: You can look at either original copies of the magazines available in the Pattee stacks or the microfilm version. The call letters listed above are for the microfilm version.]

Library Laptops

With the closing of Pollock Laptop Library, all circulating library laptops have been consolidated and now circulate only from the Reserve Reading Room.  Even laptops formerly charged out from the Gateway Library have been moved and now circulate from Reserve Reading Room.

The Gateway Library has been notified to correct their web page to reflect this change.  Thanks to the staff who brought this to our attention.

ARL Statistics Week

This is a final reminder regarding the importance of marking your reference statistics at the desk for this particular week.  This is the week the Libraries have selected to submit nationally to ARL (Association of Reserach Libraries) as a snapshot representation of reference service at public service desks.

If you think there are patron interactions you may not have marked on the desk statistic sheet this week, let me know and we can make sure they get added by early next week.

Thanks to all for your efforts this week on this special request.

Adding a Post to the Blog

Under the LINKS menu on the left of the Blog home page, click "Add a Post."  It may take a minute for the Post Editor to "load," depending on the speed of Internet connection, the speed of the computer and network traffic. Once it loads you will see an interface very much like a typical word processor, such as Microsoft Word, for example.

Enter the text for your posting and, when finished, click the "Publish post" button in lower left corner.  To return to the Blog home page, click on the "Preview blog" link at top right of this page or just close the "post" window by clicking the "x" at the top right of the page.

If you encounter any problems, just let me know.  Thanks.

Public Printing

Compatibility problem between Angel and Firefox

DLT (DIgital Libraries Technology Dept.) has received many reports of a compatibility problem between Angel and Firefox. When printing Angel files in Firefox, the print job is garbled or completely unrelated to what the file was supposed to be. DLT is working on a fix, but they don't know the timeframe for resolution.  They have posted this information on the Help Desk Alerts.

While they are working on the fix, they have recommended that we encourage Angel users to print their files from IE.  To open Internet Explorer on public LIAS pcs:

Click on START (lower left corner of the screen)
Select ALL PROGRAMS
Select INTERNET EXPLORER
